A current Fulbright Scholar, he is completing his Master’s Degree at Queens College under the tutelage of professors Dennis Mackrel, David Berkman, Michael Philip Mossman and Antonio Hart. Dexter has performed alongside jazz artists such as Antonio Hart, George Coleman, Rufus Reid and Alex Sipiagin, and is an on-call roster member of Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra in New York. His career has taken him across New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Germany, Samoa and the USA. He’s bringing the Asian Pacific Jazz Orchestra, a brand-new project of his conception. The program features the music of Te Vaka, the band behind Disney’s Grammy Award-winning film Moana , as well as originals and arrangements by Sāmoan band leader, Dexter Stanley-Tauvao. The concert will also fulfil the core goal of the APJO to present new music by Asian and Pacific Island jazz composers. This includes commissioned works, originals written by members of the orchestra, and an arrangement of a work by Matatumua Dr. Opeloge Ah Sam, a mentor to Dexter and a leading pioneer of Polynesian jazz.
